New Horizons for Seniors Grant Brings Interactive Fun to Personal Care Homes
This past spring, five personal care homes across the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority celebrated the arrival of innovative technology aimed at enhancing residents’ quality of life. Thanks to funding from the New Horizon Grant, Ashern, Fisher Branch, Rosewood Lodge, Arborg, and Kin Place personal care homes acquired Obie Interactive Projectors.
The Obie Interactive Projector is a state-of-the-art system that transforms any flat surface into an interactive play area. With over 60 games designed to promote movement, maintain mobility, and stimulate cognitive activity, it provides a fun and inclusive way to engage residents of all abilities. The games are simple and intuitive, allowing seniors to interact easily, whether individually or as part of a group.
Recreation staff across the five sites have incorporated the technology into daily programming and have already noticed the positive impact the Obie system is having on residents. “The variety of games allows us to tailor activities to meet the needs and preferences of our residents,” said Karen Melnychuk, recreation coordinator at Arborg personal care home. “We’ve seen individuals who are usually hesitant to participate in group activities light up when playing the games. It’s not just about fun – it’s about fostering connection and joy.”
The Obie projector also fosters a sense of community within personal care homes. Group games encourage social interaction and teamwork, strengthening bonds between residents. It has even inspired intergenerational activities, with family members joining in during visits.
“We’re grateful to the New Horizon Grant for making this possible,” shared Kirsten Bates, recreation coordinator at Kin Place PCH in Oakbank. “This innovative technology is a perfect example of how we can bring joy and meaningful engagement to our seniors while addressing physical and cognitive needs.”
The Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority extends heartfelt thanks to the New Horizons for Seniors Grant for its support of this initiative. Through their funding, personal care homes can continue to innovate and provide exceptional care that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of residents.
