Gimli Auxiliary makes a big impact once again with their Wish List Program!
For over 55 years, the Gimli District Health Auxiliary has enriched the lives of patients and ensured essential resources are available at the Gimli-Johnson Memorial Hospital and in the community.
The Interlake-Eastern Health Foundation and the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority extend heartfelt thanks to this incredible group of volunteers for their unwavering commitment and generosity.
In 2024, the Auxiliary contributed over $17,000 to support a wide range of services, including community mental health, diagnostics, therapy services, speech-language pathology, home care, emergency care, and cancer care. They also award two bursaries annually to Gimli High School graduates pursuing health-related education, helping to inspire and support the next generation of healthcare professionals.
A Rich History of Giving
Since their founding on September 16, 1968, with just 12 members, the Gimli District Health Auxiliary has grown into a vibrant team of over 40 passionate individuals. Their mission remains steadfast: to assist and enhance the comfort and well-being of patients at the hospital and in the surrounding community.
Through their annual “Wish List” program, the Auxiliary invites healthcare staff to identify specific needs, funding vital items for departments across the hospital. Since 2008, they have donated over $260,000, benefitting programs such as Acute Care, Palliative Care, Dialysis, Chemotherapy, EMS, Physiotherapy, Public Health, and Mental Health.
Elaine Thompson, the Auxiliary’s current president, shares her story of involvement. “Shortly after moving to Gimli, a friend asked me to help with the 2014 luncheon that the Auxiliary was hosting. I agreed, and I’ve never looked back.” When long-time president Ruby Tretiak needed to step back, she encouraged Elaine to take on the president role. “It’s been an honor to carry on the auxiliary’s legacy and continue supporting our hospital and community.”
Volunteers Making a Difference
The Auxiliary’s contributions are powered by the dedication of its members, who fundraise in creative and impactful ways. Their primary initiative is the gift shop at the hospital which offers a delightful selection of commercial and handcrafted items made by talented volunteers.
In addition to running the gift shop, Auxiliary members:
- Stock the hospital’s drink machines.
- Collect and sell used books.
- Host a popular 50/50 raffle.
- Volunteer with meals on wheels.
Every effort contributes to their success, allowing the Auxiliary to make a lasting impact on local healthcare.
A Message of Gratitude
“The support provided by the Gimli District Health Auxiliary makes an incredible difference,” says Dana DesRochers, Manager of Health Services at Gimli Hospital and CCP. “Existing funding doesn’t always cover everything we need, but the Auxiliary steps in to close that gap. Their generosity ensures our staff have the tools they need to provide exceptional care. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and the positive impact they bring to our patients and staff.”
Support the Legacy
As we celebrate the Auxiliary’s remarkable contributions, we encourage the community to get involved. You can support their efforts by visiting the gift shop, following their Facebook page, or even becoming a member. Membership is open to anyone with a passion for healthcare and community service.
From all of us at the Interlake-Eastern Health Foundation and Health Region: Thank you, Gimli District Health Auxiliary, for your years of dedication and for making a difference in the lives of so many. Your work is an inspiring reminder of what community care truly means.
